{POTD} Weekend Highlights

Today I am resting after a few days of being busy and having fun.  Friday was my birthday so I went over to a friends house for a few hours to enjoy some poolside fun.  My son had an absolute blast.  He wore himself out so much that when we arrived home just before dinner, he crawled on the couch and fell asleep immediately.

Saturday dawned early and dark for CJ.  It was around 5am when he came into the master bedroom for something.  The alarm was set to wake us at 6:30am but once CJ woke me, there was no going back to sleep for me.  After breakfast at our local Denny’s which later made me sick we arrived at Legoland.   Legoland was pretty crowded but I expected it to be especially since it was a holiday.  The highlight of CJ’s day was building lego race cars and testing them on the downhill tracks which he could have done at home for free and getting wet.  I am so thankful I was able to get his ticket for considerably less and that I had a BOGO for the adult admissions too.

Then today when I finally crawled out of bed and made my way to my computer, I had a pleasant surprise in my email.  Earlier this past week I had left comments about a product giveaway over at PetaPixel and luckily I was the winner.  Just love getting prizes, especially when they are for my camera.  Can’t wait to try out my new a handheld tripod from QuikPod.

{POTD}Thursday Thirteen Edition #26

Thursday creeped up on me quickly this week.  Right now I am recovering from a rush drive down the hill to do a little shopping.  First I had to stop in Kohl’s, mott to see if I could find some amazing deals.  A few weeks ago my friend was able to score two KitchenAid Stand Mixers at around $60 each on the clearance rack.  I would love to find such a bargain but alas it was not meant to be for me.  I did find a pair of boots I have been eyeballing for awhile but their $60 plus price tag always stopped me.  Wednesday I found them on the clearance rack for $12.99.  Found a purse that was normally $52 for $25 and a pair of shoes for my son, on clearance of course, for $6.99.  During checkout I scored another $15 off my total for being denied a credit card.  Can we say an early Happy Birthday to me!

Then it was on to Costco before they closed.  I had less than 30 minutes to grab what I needed.  Shopping at Costco is a big deal for me because its approximately 65 miles one way to the nearest Costco.  But it is worth it.  I have insulated cooler bags I put all the cold stuff in to keep chilled on the drive home.  Very important since this is the desert and where Costco is located, it gets to be about 120 degrees or more during the summer days.  The only good thing about the high temperatures is that it drives all of the “Snowbirds” elsewhere for the summer.

So here are thirteen items I purchased at Costco last night.

{POTD} Birthdays

UPDATE AS OF 7/02/09 – I really spaced yesterday and forgot to post a picture of the prize for my first Giveaway.  So scroll down and check it out!

Today marks the beginning of a very month of birthdays.  My friend Scary Mommy is celebrating her birthday today and her husband wrote a wonderful post today about her on her blog.

As for my immediate family, we will all celebrate a birthday over the next 32 days.  We begin with my birthday on the 3rd.  Then my daughter will turn 16 on the 9th.  Chris will reluctantly age a year on the 31st and his namesake will be 6 years old on August 1st.  This year we will celebrate with one big birthday bash on August 1st at Disneyland. Here are some pictures from birthdays past…

CJ's Fifth Birthday

Growing up, my birthday was generally overshadowed by the Fourth of July.  I used to think that all the fireworks were for my birthday. As I get older, I really don’t mind having all the attention focused on America’s Birthday Celebration.

Continuing on with the July birthdays.  Three of my high school friends will also be celebrating their birthdays this month.  If you are involved with social media then some of you may know Perry Belcher who will be turning an un-disclosed age on the 28th.  My friend Dawn, a certified Theta Healing Practioner, will be celebrating her birthday on the 29th.

And since it is my birthday this month, I am feeling generous so I am going to have my first Give-a-way here on my blog.  I am following the wise words of the BlogCoach and will use Twiveaway to conduct this Give-a-way.  First you probably want to know what I am giving away.

Monochrome Weekly

I am a day late with my contribution to Monochrome Weekly.  At first I was stumped as to what photograph I wanted to display this week.  Overnight while I was working on building my photography website it came to me.  And on my way home this morning after dropping my daughter off at the bus stop I remembered what I was going to post.  So here is my belated Monochrome Weekly photograph.

{POTD} Precious Moments

My friend Jen over at Shutter Sisters is celebrating her son’s eighth birthday today.  Indeed the years do seem to fly by as your kids get older.  One day your baby girl is celebrating her third birthday with new toys and the next she’s old enough to entertain and babysit her younger brother.  And next week she’ll be 16!  In a blink of an eye nothing is the same.  Thank goodness we have the ability to capture those precious moments on film so that the memories can live on a little longer.

Indeed those days of childhood do pass quickly.   So what moments in time have you frozen?  If your not already a Shutter Sister, click on over there and give them a try.  I’m positive you’ll find it a rewarding experience.

What you need to know about Memory Cards

I was reading one of the lessons from the distance learning photography course I am taking and I came upon this information about the memory cards we all use in our digital cameras.  Very good to know and not something I have seen on or in the packaging of memory cards available today.

Memory Card Variety

Memory Card Variety

So here is 10 things you need to know about Memory Cards:

  1. Before you turn your camera off, make sure it has finished saving the image.  Many cameras have a blinking light to let you know its working.  Personally my camera will tell me it’s “busy” if i try doing this.  You risk losing your images or even corrupting the memory card entirely if you turn off your camera too soon.
  2. Never remove the memory card from your camera while it is still on.  Again you can lose all your pictures.
  3. There is a speed at which your camera takes a pictures and saves it to the memory card.  This is called transfer speed and it is measured as frames per second or fps for short.  The higher the fps rate is, the more continuous pictures you can take and save to your memory card.  And if your camera can record video on top of taking still photographs, than you definitely want a memory card with a high transfer rate otherwise your videos will appear choppy upon playback.  It is recommended to get a memory card with a Class 6 or higher rating.  These memory cards should have a transfer rate of 30fps.
  4. Don’t use up all the memory available on the card.  Just like when you have too many files saved on your hard drive, your computer will slow down considerably and may not be able to read or find the images on the memory card.
  5. Always use fresh or a fully charged rechargeable battery in your camera. Good to monitor your battery light while taking pictures too.  Little to no juice in your battery can prevent your camera from saving those pictures to the memory card.
  6. Do not place your memory cards near powerful electrical sources or strong magnetic field.  Just like your credit card, those sources cn instantly erase all the images stored on the memory card.
  7. Hndle the memory cards properly.  Pay attention when inserting the cards into their appropriate slot.  They only go in one way and forcing them could permanently damage the memory card.
  8. Store your memory cards in a safe place so they won’t get damaged.  Either keep them in the plastic case they originally came in or purchase a soft case that has individual pouches for storing multiple memory cards.
  9. Do not touch the electrical contacts on the memory cards.  Touching the contact can damage the delicate circuitry that makes them work.  Memory cards can also be damaged by the oily residue on your fingers, exposure to liquids or moisture.
  10. Constantly deleting the images from the card can lead to damage or memory card corruption.  It is better to reformat the card once you have transferred your images to your computer.  Most digital cameras have the option to reformat cards available in their menus.

Well there you have it.  Some useful tips to preserve your memory cards and protect the precious moments we capture with our digital cameras.

{POTD} Summer Stock Sunday #5

Time for another Summer Stock Sunday

The days of summer are quickly heating up.  Just over 100 degrees outside right now and its just about 6:21pm here in California.  And summer has just begun.  I think its time for me to find the swim suit and join my son and his friend in the kiddie pool out back.

Wishing everyone a scent-sational Sunday!
